The national Street Pastors Web Site Street PastorsStreet Pastors is an inter-denominational Church response to urban problems, engaging with people on the streets to care, listen and dialogue. It was pioneered in London in January 2003 and has seen some remarkable results, including drops in crime in areas where teams have been working. There are now over 100 teams around the United Kingdom. It has the support of local churches and community groups, and the police and the city council. In December 2008, Preston and South Ribble Street Pastors were commissioned and began work on the streets of the St Matthew and St George area of the city on Friday evenings. These are amongst the worst 50 in the Country on the national deprivation statistics suffering with problems of street prostitution, drug dealing, under age drinking, racial tension and associated anti-social behavior. We began with 24 volunteers but this has now grown to over 40 from 20 different churches. In December 2009 we were invited by the police to expand our work by crossing over London Road and including the city centre after closing time, and we are also currently training our newest volunteers with a view to launching a second, separate team in the south of the city from Easter 2010. St Matthew's Church is the base for the Street Pastors Friday night 'patrols'. Trusetees
