The Parish from south of the River Ribble The Parish of The Risen Lord is a large area of south-east Preston with three places of worship: St Matthew's Church, St James Church and St Matthew's Mission on Acregate Lane, often referred to as "Acregate". (see map). The parish has a population of about 17,000. It was created in 1996 from the parishes of St James, St Mary and St Matthew. The area was a typical cotton mill area with a number of thriving mills, all now long gone. The area is inner city and urban, mainly terraced housing, with some high-rise flats, with industrial areas and many small businesses. It is a multi-cultural area with a high percentage of people have ethnic origins other than english, including many from the Indian sub-continent, as well as Afro-Caribbeans and Eastern Europeans. The parish has two former council estates. The parish has many of the problems of the typical inner-city. |
